Design Decode

I recently shared some insights on design for living with wildfire in Design Decode magazine. Find an extract below and the interview in full here.

Extract:

“Wildfires are unpredictable, influenced by factors like weather, landscape, and ecology. Nature responds to this unpredictability with a variety of strategies. My first task was studying these strategies and classifying fire-adapted plants, or pyrophytes. Their unique traits – whether chemical, biological, or ecological – help them survive fires. I designed a classification system that applies these traits to architecture. Just as nature creates different ecosystems, I developed different architectural “biomes.” These systems interact with their environment and other man-made elements in a life-like way, adjusting to different fire intensities and conditions. The goal is to create dynamic, adaptable designs that evolve with the landscape over time, unlike static, industrial-era architecture.”
